Pack rats collect fruit and seeds in the spring and summer months to store away for winter. These stores are covered with anything the pack rat can find - sticks, stones, leaves or other debris. The store is then covered with the spiny joints of the cholla cactus to deter other desert animals from raiding the pack rat's nest.
